Residential Rehab

Substance abuse affects a significant part of the US population, with many individuals eventually seeking help and treatment for their problem. While some individuals attempt to battle their addiction on their own or via external programs or group therapy, in-patient, or residential rehab programs can be key to helping manage severe addictions.

There are several different types of rehabilitation programs of varying intensities and duration available to patients seeking treatment. The appropriate program will depend on the patient’s physical and emotional state, the severity of their addiction, and their current living or social situation. Patients with severe addictions who are living in a context that is likely to be detrimental to their sobriety efforts, for example, are more likely to enter a residential drug rehab facility on a full-time basis.

Residential drug rehab facility treatments

While programs vary from facility to facility, most follow a similar general path. They begin with detoxification and medically supervised withdrawal, which is essential for patients addicted to drugs with dangerous or even potentially life threatening withdrawal symptoms.

This aspect of the treatment involves only the physiological element of the addiction: it is the later stages of treatment that address the other factors that underpin addiction. These subsequent stages involve behavioral therapy such as counseling to identify and help treat the patient’s addictive behaviors and provide them with the tools they need for a successful recover in the long term.

Residential drug and alcohol rehab centers

Residential rehab can take place over both the short- and long-term, and some programs may also involve only part-time care. This may be the case for youth addicts, for example, who may live at home and have a family support network who can closely monitor their behaviors, or individuals who can’t be removed from their daily routines without detrimental effect.

Long-term residential drug and alcohol rehab centers are usually non-hospital settings, and provide around-the-clock care to patients. A common long-term residential rehab approach is that of the therapeutic community, where patients reside for six to twelve months and are re-socialized into being a productive member of society. These communities typically involve individual and group therapy, and the community itself – including staff and fellow patients – all become part of the therapy.

The treatment is typically structured in nature, and involves self-assessment and self-analysis with the aim of helping addicted individuals to take control of their behavior in a positive way.

Residential rehab can also take the form of short-term programs, where individuals participate in programs that last from several weeks to several months. These approaches are modeled on the well-known 12-step approach and consist of a shot-term hospital-based stay followed by an outpatient program where the individual continues to participate in counseling, therapy and treatment. Patients usually remain in associated 12-step support groups, which provide a support structure for the addicted individual beyond the initial rehab program.

Additionally, patients who are incarcerated are likely to participate in a form of in-patient rehab treatment, an approach that has been found to be effective in helping break their addiction and prevent relapse – especially if the program is continued after their release from prison.

Choosing a residential rehab center

While in some instances a physician or medical or law enforcement professional may make recommendations for a residential rehab center, in many instances the patient or their family will be the ones enrolling the individual in treatment. If this is the case, then they will need to select an appropriate rehab center – one that will help the patient manage their addiction and facilitate post-treatment sobriety.

The length of the stay required, the type and severity of addiction being treated, the individual’s background and current situation, and the staff credentials are all factors that need to be considered – along with cost, insurance coverage, relapse prevention and aftercare coverage. For some, the flexibility of the program length, as well as the location – close to home or far away – may be requirements.
